Director
Ruud van Overdijk is a director with a background as a performing artist in musical theatre, concert performance, and physical theatre. His extensive stage experience — from RENT to Jesus Christ Superstar and Chess — forms the foundation of a directing approach that is both intuitive and dramaturgically informed.
He works from rhythm, musicality, and trust, creating an environment in which performers are encouraged to explore, take risks, and grow. For him, directing is not a separate discipline, but an extension of storytelling: form only gains meaning when it resonates emotionally. His work is characterised by precision, engagement, and a sharp sense of theatrical clarity. He has a strong ability to draw authenticity from both emerging and experienced performers. Whether working on an intimate concert setting or a full-scale production, he consistently seeks a shared artistic ground.
In 2024, he directed the musical theatre production Dogfight at ’t Zonnehuis in Amsterdam (Stichting MAE). The production confronted audiences with themes such as beauty standards, peer pressure, and the aftermath of war. Under his direction, the raw material was shaped into a restrained and honest staging in which the vulnerability of the characters remained central. The production was praised for its thematic clarity and strong dramatic structure.
In addition, Ruud directed the classical music duo Haqulot in their theatrical concert centred around Verfemte Musik, highlighting suppressed and forgotten composers. For the vocal group Just Us from Veldhoven, he developed the programme True Colors: an a cappella performance exploring identity, connection, and expression. Across these concert formats, he consistently bridges musical structure with dramaturgical depth and emotional storytelling.

Dogfight (2024)
In the autumn of 2024, Ruud van Overdijk directed the musical theatre production Dogfight by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul at ’t Zonnehuis in Amsterdam. The production tells the story of young American Marines on the eve of their deployment to Vietnam, focusing on themes such as peer pressure, ideals of beauty, and personal growth.
Under Ruud’s direction, the raw and confronting script was shaped into an honest and restrained staging in which vulnerability remained at the centre. Rather than judging the characters, the production created space for the grey areas where shame, power structures, and desire intersect. This thematic depth was reinforced through both musical and physical performance, without losing sight of the human dimension.
In its review, Musicalsites praised the production for its social relevance and compelling approach:
“Dogfight, the directorial debut of Ruud van Overdijk, confronts the audience in a powerful way with urgent and relevant themes. Topics such as beauty standards, war, gender dynamics, and societal expectations are clearly present in this production.”
